My name is Richard and I’m a blogaholic …

… and I’m retarded.

I abandoned my first attempt at blogging because I ended up posting only about once a month. In other words, I failed. This time I think I’ve succeeded. Ideally, bloggers should blog on an at least daily basis. Mostly, I’ve been doing that. And there’s Tim’s and Reed’s posts as well for our more discerning readers.

I judge Eternal Vigilance to be a success! (Judge’s decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.)

But I’ve run into a problem. I’m spending increasing amounts of time blogging. Here, there and everywhere. And then there’s the insidious, creeping evil that goes by the name of Facebook … I’m hitting that “Like” button like a pigeon in a psychology lab. I’m being sucked into an online vortex, death spiralling to self-destruction.

Oh, no, I’m not!

I’ve resolved to have a week off to assess my situation. No posting, no commenting and I won’t be reading your posts, either.

I’m taking back the power!

I choose life, not creeping death.

  1. The internet is the New Mission field Richard. Every time you hit ‘like’ on facebook you are promoting a value/ ideal/ truth/ lie/ vice/ etc which either deserves/ does not deserve to be upheld. Ie You are exercising your moral weight in the world for Good or Ill. Thus I would not feel guilty about being a heavy user of the net unless it interfears with other important personal responciblities.
(I guess this did not really need to be said… but there you go… I said it. šŸ™‚ )

  2. Having said this I also think I involve myself in too many petty issues… Perhapse it is best to pick out the more important fights to fight so as to avoid rendering your voice too cheep??? This is a difficult thing to weigh. Idealism demands 100% dedication, irrespective of such pragmatic conciderations.

  3. Dont blame FB for the Human condition Richard.
Culpability cannot be negated because of deterministic ‘Excuses’. It is individualistic…. We own it….because of freedom…. you cant excuse sin by blaming God for the way things are…. we all make *real choices* irrespective of the external/ materialistic forces we experience…. indeed our ‘the weight of our moral choices’ must prevail against the mundane lode.
We must endure FB for the sake of that small minority of souls who will be awakened by our sowing of the seed…

Don’t think I did, Tim. But I did give it my best FU finger. How do you confront insidious, creeping evil? “Give it the finger” isn’t bad advice at all!

Culpability cannot be negated because of deterministic ā€˜Excusesā€™.

I thought that was my line?! See my post on Original Sin.

I always blame myself first. Like this morning at work when our entire service went down. I blamed myself. So did everyone else! But it turned out the problem was due to something else entirely and had nothing to do with me at all!

Tim, I think we are in full agreement on the basic points.

    But this …

We must endure FB for the sake of that small minority of souls who will be awakened by our sowing of the seedā€¦

… is not what I was told. I was told I’m not supposed to be there until further notice. Unless it’s SEAL-style. Fly straight in, do the business, fly straight out.

  5. Also, Tim, when you have a particularly high incidence of fatalities on a particular stretch of road (we used to have the “Highway of Death” down here in Kapiti before centre barriers were installed a few years ago) do you blame the drivers or blame the road? Ultimately it is the fault of the drivers … but the road is to blame too … well, as a proxy for whoever built it, anyway.

There are some evil masterminds behind Facebook, for sure.
